Here's what Trippy members say about the Palms Casino Resort:

'It's next to Palms Casino Resort with some super views of the strip from most rooms (ask) and always priced just under strip prices.' See More

'Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Harrah's Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, Flamingo Las Vegas and Palms Casino Resort are fun to gamble.' See More

When you walk into the reimagined Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, its edginess remains. A 13-foot-long tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde by British artist Damien Hirst sits on top of the center bar. A neon light art installation beams “Wish you were here” in hot pink as guests check in at the front desk.

The high-energy atmosphere is the same, but the tattoo parlor is gone (you're welcome) as is the legendary rooftop Ghostbar.

Those have been replaced with more refined shops and restaurants that aim to draw back those who remember the heartbeat of the old Palms while also luring new guests looking for a more luxurious Vegas experience.

The resort has new restaurants by celebrity chefs Bobby Flay, Michael Symon and Marc Vetri. It has a pop-up store from e-retailer Revolve. An impressive collection of artwork from Warhol to Banksy decorates the property. And a posh new collection of guest suites includes one called 'Make Good Choices' and another designed by Hirst that goes for $100,000 a night.

'It’s a much more elevated experience for sure, I think, even from what the Palms was in its peak,' said Jon Gray, general manager of the resort.

The Palms rockets to fame

Not long after it opened in 2001, the Palms became the hot place to stay thanks in part to MTV’s 'Real World: Las Vegas' where the cast lived while shooting the show in 2002. The resort attracted stars such as Britney Spears, who partied at Ghostbar.

But a decade after its quick rise to fame, the resort struggled under the weight of more than $459 million in debt. In June 2011, owner George Maloof worked to restructure the debt by partnering with TPG and Leonard Green & Partners. Months later, the group took a 98 percent controlling interest of the property.

In 2016, Station Casinos purchased the resort for $312.5 million. It made plans to restore the excitement of the old Palms while updating to reflect the new tastes of today's Vegas visitors.

Gray has been along for all those peaks and valleys. He started as a front desk manager when the resort opened in November 2001. He met his wife at the Palms. His kids were born while he worked his way up. Considering that the resort is almost a second home for him, Gray's sense of pride in seeing the completion of one the most expensive renovations in Vegas history is not surprising.

'When we look at the pillars of our experience, we feel like we've nailed it with a great culinary program (and) the art itself,' Gray said.

Those pillars of the renovation sought to blend artwork, unique dining experiences and hot names in music. The initial renovation started in January 2017, and the resort has stayed open throughout — updating everything from guest rooms to nightclubs to restaurants to the hospitality.

Gray is excited to see all the parts come together thanks to the investment from Station Casino.

'They wanted to make sure they maintained the energy and the fun the Palms was known for, but adding a much more elevated experience and elevated design,' he said.

Notable artwork at the Palms

Banksy: The Banksy, featuring two police officers with happy faces, is directly behind the DJ booth as you enter through the graffiti tunnel into the Greene St. Kitchen restaurant.

Damien Hirst: The British artist has several notable works in the resort. The first piece you'll see is his 1999 'The Unknown (Explored, Explained, Exploded).' It's a 13-foot-long tiger shark that has been divided into three parts and suspended in formaldehyde. It is the focal point of the center bar, also called Unknown.

The largest piece, a 60-foot-tall sculpture of a headless demon called 'Demon With a Bowl,' will be the centerpiece of the pool area. Station Casino owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta purchased the piece at Hirst's Venice show.

In the Scotch 80 Prime steakhouse, check out 'The Believer.' It's meant to simulate looking through a kaleidoscope. Up close, you'll notice it is made up of hundreds of butterfly wings.

Andy Warhol: You can spot two pieces from Andy Warhol's 'The Athlete' series on the wall of the private dining room in Scotch 80 Prime, as well as 'Repent and Sin No More.' Warhol's 'Dollar Sign' paintings hang above the bar in the High Limit Gaming Lounge. In Vetri Cucina Italian restaurant, you'll have views of the Strip as well as Warhol's 'Flowers.'

The Palms new restaurants

The Palms has an all-you-can-eat buffet among its new restaurants. Here are some of the featured chefs and mixologists who have opened in the Palms.
